Tape Art has a rich history in healing
and healthcare, beginning in 1995 with the Hope mural, drawn for the
relief workers in Oklahoma City directly after the Alfred P. Murrah
federal building bombing. We currently create collaborative drawings
several times a month at Hasbro Children’s Hospital here in Providence,
Rhode Island. Through our experiences working inside healthcare environments,
we have found Tape Art to provide patients with a positive opportunity
for engagement, expression, ownership, and escape.
It is important to stress the opportunities for creativity
we provide for patients. While we love drawing, we feel most
privileged when we enable others to express themselves creatively.
Whether that is by providing a brief demonstration, handing
people their own roll and giving them the o.k. to "go for it", or by
asking them questions about what things they might want on the walls
and providing the opportunity for patients to act as directors of their
very own mural-making performance.
We salute all those who choose
to work in healthcare and believe that as visual artists and educators
we have our own part to play in a patient’s
well being. Inside healthcare environments we wear a variety of hats: as instructors
(helping a sister transform her brother's room), facilitators (taking
instructions from bedridden patients), and sensitive creatures who
enjoy creating.(we love the opportunity to communicate with patients, families,
and staff to gather ideas and uncover interests)
