At last, the tape talks! In 1999, after years of drawing life-sized narratives, we find ourselves more than ready to create figures that move and interact in a realm beyond the wall. It all began when we were asked back to the Annual Art All-State event at the Worcester Art Museum. This was the fifth time we had presented Tape Art to the students participating in this great event and the sixth time we've returned to create a mural on this very same wall (including the 5 week Hygia performance). It was definitely time to do something just a little different. We set up our trusty Mac inside a van outside the museum and set forth, armed with our Hi-8 camera, a bunch of tape and a misty notion that included a woodpecker. As day progressed into night and back again, we climbed aboard a steep learning curve, quickly discovering basic things like the need for lights, why a finger is a little faster to animate than a car, and how to make an entire soundtrack in half an hour. |
Below you've got three choices of our 1 min animation. Each has a trade-off between quality and time. Any of the following mini-movies will begin to play almost immediately, so you can watch it as it downloads. If your computer hasn't already got a Quicktime player you will need to install Quicktime from the Apple site. (Any Quicktime player will do). (This is the first time we've put videos on our site, so if you encounter any technical hitches please email us and we'll do our best to fix it or help out.) |

Woodpecker
Lite |
Fastest to load but lowest quality. Good for people with older computers or not a lot of patience. With a 28.8 modem, this will probably take anywhere from 1 to 3mins to load. |
|
Woodpecker
Medium |
The
good all-rounder. With a 28.8 modem, and depending on connection / server
/ login time, this'll be around 3min to 5mins loading time.
|
|
Woodpecker
Heavy |
The
one we encourage you to see. Smooth and Big. A joy. Will take quite
a few minutes for the average system, but you lot with cable modems
will eat it up.

OK, while on the subject of film clips, we thought we'd give you the opportunity to see some more Tape Art video / animation experiments. Here's a couple for starters and we have a few more up our sleeve. (Both are silent). |

Subculture |
The
students at Longmeadow High School in MA made this time-lapse document
of our mural in their gym. To find out more on the Subculture mural,
first see the time-lapse.

Hess
2020 |
How
murals are really made. One of the panels in the nine-ptych mural in
Allentown, as part of the Mayfair festival. We have plenty of background
on the Hess mural, but
go see the video first!

Mural
up, mural down -Tape Artists on the road. |
Here is a rare glimpse
in to the entire Tape Art process from beginning to end. Old murals
never die, they just fade away. (Actually
we just take them down, but that lakes a certain ring...right McCarthy?)
