On Saturday the 24th in downtown Des Moines we opened a little french cafe.
It was in business for only one day.

The homogenous humming of little french cars whizzing by a little sidewalk cafe set the mood... and the tables... for disaster. Not unlike their automotive counterparts, these pesky little blighters showed up in small herds, weaving and ducking and being a general nuisance. But as they say "adfinodifoe". (When the main course is acorns, then chaos is always desert.)
Here is the sidewalk cafe. It was started at long before breakfast and finished by lunch. This wall was at the heart of the Farmers Market, a weekend event that draws thousands into downtown Des Moines. The streets are blocked off and we arrived early to get a jump start on the mural. As we stood in the street brainstorming on a theme, a man sellling bread set up a large umbrella on the sidewalk, directly beween us and our beautiful blank wall. Within 7 more hours, there were three more umbrellas and the stage was set for some casual eating.

Bright eyed and bushy tailed - Erica emerges from underneath a table. This year in Des Moines there was, apparently, a disproportionate amount of surly squirrelies.

Here are the Boones. They posed for all of the characters at this table. The gentleman on the left is taunting a squirrel by holding an acorn just out of its stubby reach. And where will teasing a squirrel get you? It will get you standing at a table with all the chairs knocked over, severely outnumbered and definitely without any acorns.

This is the waitress on the far right hand side of the mural, returning to her tables only to see that the continual orders for acorns has caused a serious problem.
