Fifth-graders from Findley Elementary School and eighth-graders from Callanan Middle School received hands-on lessons in the finer points of how to make art using tape. Artists Erica Duthie and Michael Townsend, plus the 84 students, used the Des Moines Civic Center's exterior walls as their canvas. Ami Smith, top photo, becomes a living example of her art teacher Bryan Butcher's creation.

The text from the article pretty much "tells" what happened on the Civic Center. But what it does not mention is that we worked with all 84 students at the same time. We had a little over an hour to teach 840 fingers to draw with the Tape, cover the theme, and make sure that the enthusiastic herd of instant public artists was stampeding in the same direction. The theme, by the way, was directed by the concept "Shed A Light On Character". That phrase was the accumulated influence of two different events: The Young Thomas Edison play being performed at the Civic Center and Statewide Iowa Character Week starting that week. The students tackled this theme by drawing themselves onto the wall with emphasis placed on what a third party would conclude about that person with just the clues from their artwork. The impact that this number of students made in an hour was impressive, and with this many people shedding a light on their character at the same time, it got pretty bright.
