Gazing out the airplane window, it was easy to imagine we were on a big yellow school bus, rolling towards some indefinably fun destination, rather than shooting through the air at several hundred miles per hour. The sense of excitement was the same. We were heading for Iowa, straight to capitol city Des Moines, where the people are friendly, the walls are blank, the hills roll to the south and every month is official Pork Month.

Let us start by saying that we love Des Moines. Rarely have we received such a warm reception from everyone we met. Our stay was superbly orchestrated by the soon to be infamous Des Moines Tape Art Committee and included a great mixture of hands-on collaborative and solo mural making in a wide cross-section of venues. We started with a mural and workshops at the annual Diversity Conference and ended an action packed eight days later in front of a sea of raised hands at Rolling Green elementary with a slide show presentation.

In fact the trip was so successful it looks like we will be back in Des Moines this coming spring by popular demand. Prompted by the fact the city has the best collection of beautiful blank walls we've ever seen, we are also talkin' up a storm about a huge city wide Tape Art Fest. A public art and mural making celebration that would showcase local talent mixed with our own mural making... all very exciting, something we've been ruminating on for a few years now as we've been traveling around, looking for that perfect city...

We were excited to recieve an envelope full of drawings sent to us by pupils we taught from Rolling Green Elementary School. You will find these wonderful pictures at the top of each of the Des Moines pages, along with their names and a quote if you do the right thing with your cursor.

This page is designed for Navigator 4.0 and has lots of Java scripting. We will also make available a page without the whizzy functions for the older browsers.

We sincerely apologize if our graphic depiction of the corn in Iowa is misrepresented by our memories.
