The Week of Hope Mural continues to grow in response to Wednesday's theme of "Sharing". Food strikes us as a fitting subject, and brings together these differently-hatted diners.

Gear Up - Wednesday

Gear Up is an initiative promoting education amongst “at risk” teens. More specifically, The goal is to keep young folks focused and in school. We met with selected students and their teachers at the Art Festival Fairgrounds, split up, and spent the morning conversing while Taping. Importantly, the program recognized the importance of engaging teachers too, so while a couple of us worked with the students, a separate and specific teacher-training workshop for the teachers was held.

Every once in a while we encounter people who gravitate towards a very specific technical Tape Art trick - ripping lines. The little lines generated by this process are critical for creating the minor details that really push our imagery, and ripping them is a meditative process which takes patience and focus. Most people new to Tape Art work primarily towards making a large impact - and Tape is great for that. But there is certainly something to be said for the newly initiated who choose to hone their fine motor skills and focus on ripping lines. These lines went on to represent the ferns of a tree, planted on an island, surrounded by the sea.

Special Care

Special Care is an organization that provides assistance to children with special needs. They promote a blend of students with and without developmental disabilities - working from the belief that everyone stands to benefit from the interactions that arise. Tape Art arrived aiming to catalyze new experiences, between students, their space, and the faculty at Special Care.

We met a young man with a distinct fascination for newspapers. Every day he would recreate the front page of the local paper, lettering the headlines and laying out the stories. Tape Art became a medium for him to elaborate on his interest by first drawing the street where a newspaper can be found, then rendering with precise details a newspaper vending machine. The expansion of his interest onto the walls of his environment is a powerful experience, as was the opportunity for him to demonstrate his accumulated knowledge about newspaper-related objects and places. Beyond all this, or perhaps because of it, this young man loved Tape Art.
