Day Four: Tuesday: The drawing at Ink Fine Stationers
What a beautiful card shop. The owner had cleared out a showcase wall for us that was in a temporary state of "blank" as it awaited a more permanent piece of artwork to be hung on its vacant surface. In the first ten minutes we were there, we quickly came to appreciate that this store was an epicenter for planning weddings and other very personal life events. In that store, people would make the delicate decisions about color palettes for invitations, the meaning of fonts, the possible party favors that could be handed out at their ceremonies and who would receive all these important things. A store filled with such well designed objects, papers and prints and ultimately it seemed that these things would become the sources of stress for those desperate to have the perfect event.
Our host and her young employee did a great job of fielding phone calls and giving hope to people that everything was going to be ok. In the midst of all this planning activity we started to feel the future of the vast multitude of meals that were going to be had at these wide variety of ceremonies. In the space we were working in, the unadorned surface we were on framed a wooden table with chairs that the store used for sitting down to chat with clients as well as a work surface for organizing party favors.
Dinner it was! We set about drawing a slightly absurd, slightly decadent party scene meshed together from a wide range of ideas. Included in the drawing were: quails, wine, candelabra, baby sharks, chocolate covered strawberries... basically all the things that we would like to have at our fancy dinner party. We threw in two cats for good measure and the maitre d' bringing in one more mystery dish under a shiny, metal dome with his face reflecting in it (this of course was represented by to slightly curved pieces of green tape.)
We really hope that part of that drawing would become prophetic and maybe, just maybe inspire one of the planning couples to take it to the next level.
