Day Five: Wednesday: The drawing at the home of the Buckley's
This home was incredible! The last location we visited on that day, and it proved to be a challenge of sorts and a real treat through and through. As soon as we entered we were struck by the near absence of any open wall space, and after the quick tour and familial introductions, we were then struck even harder by the discernible cohesion of the material covering the walls. Coney Island! All things Coney Island. We asked. They just love Coney Island, they said. Pictures, Posters, Framed Tickets, and Statues surrounded us. And within this incredible collection, an even finer-tuned theme became obvious . . . Monkeys Monkeys Monkeys. All shapes, sizes, caricatures, and possible orientations represented.
Monkeys are fast and fun to draw, so we have a history with them. Its obvious what happened next. Monkey Attack! With the permission of the Buckleys, we set off throughout the house to draw as many monkeys, doing as many outrageous things as we could muster. We started out asking: “How about a monkey over here? Over there behind that couch? Next to the kitchen sink?” However, it didn’t take them long to take the reigns, and before we knew it the entire family was was working together to conduct the Monkey drawing orchestra. No More Questions, Just Directions. “Over there. Next in the bathroom, brushing his teeth. Next in the laundry room with a shirt on. Now by the T.V. with a Guitar Hero controller.” We even drew Monkeys rampaging their wall of family history. It was awesome. We drew so many Monkeys in that short period of time that we likely forgot to photograph some of them. Lazy Monkeys, Dancing Monkeys, Sneaky Monkeys, and least one adorable baby Monkey.
This home was unique in so many ways. Its inhabitants first and foremost, but also that our experience with them was totally different than the other places we visited, because once they took control, they became the driving force behind our work and really taught us a thing or two about what Monkeys are capable of. We were delighted and surprised by some of the Buckley’s Monkeys, so thanks guys!
