Tape Art: Public Art, Art Education, and Healing

Let's draw together. You and I. And a wall. Some drawing tape, some time. The world is our canvas. We can draw whatever we want, wherever we want. We will draw together.

We practice and teach Tape Art, a method of creating collaborative, temporary murals and installations using a special low-adhesive Drawing Tape. For twenty years, we have worked in hospitals, schools, museums, and public spaces all over the world.

Depending on its scale, a Tape Art drawing can be made in a few hours or a few days. Once completed, the drawing remains on the walls for only a short time: from several hours to a couple of days. We develop the theme and content of each drawing on-site as we draw.

We are public artists dedicated to working collaboratively. We invigorate public spaces and help others find a voice through the use of drawn lines. Tape Art from the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC

During the ArtBeat Festival the first week in May, artists Michael Townsend, Colin Bliss and Paige Bradlley created a series of public tape art drawings on the facades of downtown retail shops, restaurants, and other highly trafficked areas that promises to bring the community together in a unique way.

Video created for the band State Radio and directed by Sam White. The Tape Artists combine a mix of animation techniques - blending tape, wood cut outs, digital stop motion and fire - to tell the story of a loving couple's final moments.

Flower Blossoming Action

April, 2008
During a residency with the HK International Artists' Workshop 2008, we collaborated with the kai fongs (neighbors) of the Sham Shui Po K20 – K23 urban renewal district to create a large temporary artwork in response to critical issues of redevelopment in their neighborhood. The temporary artwork showcased drawings of different shops and storefronts directly threatened by redevelopment. Over 50 neighbors participated.
